Driving Habits which could Damage your Car

Most people who drive will tell you how much pride they take in their vehicle and this should make anyone want to take care when driving. Whilst you may think that the way you drive could have no negative impact on your car, there are a number of bad driving habits which drivers do every single day without any idea of what the consequences could be for their vehicle. In this blog we will be pointing out a few of the most common driving habits which could damage your car.

Resting your Hand on the Gearstick

Although we are all told very early on in our driving life that you should always keep both hands on the steering wheel, it doesn’t take long for some people to start ignoring this advice. It is very common for drivers to rest one hand on the gearstick without even thinking about it. Many people aren’t aware that this can actually be bad for the transmission. The gearstick in your car is connected to a selector fork. This is only meant to make contact with a rotating collar for a short amount of time. Resting your hand on the gearstick risks applying pressure to the selector fork, causing premature wear.

Ignoring warning lights

The warning lights on your car’s dashboard may seem a pain at times but they are there for a reason! Ignoring any of these lights could cause further damage to your vehicle and make repairs even more costly. It could also make your car a danger to the road so you should always investigate when you see a warning light. If you’re not sure what a specific light means, you should be able to find out by taking a look at the owner’s manual.

Late Braking

We all end up in situations where the use of our brakes is vital and all drivers will have to carry out an emergency stop at some point. However, if you are someone who over-uses these sudden stops, it can place much more strain on the braking system, wearing out your pads and discs faster. If you take care in driving at a slightly slower speed, you are less likely to need to brake late on a regular basis.
